Niels den Ottelander

Chairman

Niels also has some experience in relief work. From the beginning of the war he has been involved in online groups to share information, he volunteers at an online radio station on twitter. He has helped other foundations such as, Sails of Freedom and Netherlands 4 Ukraine with logistics, finding shelters. He has helped set up apartments for Ukrainian soldiers who are in the Netherlands for treatment.

The war taught him many new things, for example: A generous donor donated 4 pallets of solar panels after the dam breach in Cherson and wanted to send them to Cherson to connect to generators donated through another foundation. He now knows how to arrange international transportation to Ukraine. There are many examples of ad hoc volunteer work. However, frustration took hold and he wanted to roll up his own sleeves and since December 2022, he and Robin and Bas, among others, have made seven trips to Ukraine in a large rented 9 passenger bus. Full of medical supplies and ICT equipment. On the way back refugees were taken to the Netherlands. He now knows the regulations around humanitarian aid from the Polish and Ukrainian customs very well. These rules are going to change, there will be more administration, we hear from many volunteers that they are going to quit for that reason. However with Debbie, Niels, Rob and Robin, more and more items are being offered and the demand from Ukraine is increasing. Due to our excellent contacts with Polish and Ukrainian foundations, these changing regulations are not a problem for us. During several trips we have brought specific items at the request of the Ukrainian Embassy in the Netherlands.
